We are learning to

  • Write an opinion paragraph
  • Read for meaning by applying reading strategies
  • Generate critical questions
  • Identify literary devices

Success Criteria

I will know I am successful when I can…

  • write a topic sentence that clearly states my opinion
  • include at least three supporting details
  • explain how the supporting details support my opinion
  • use punctuation correctly to communicate my ideas

I will know I am successful when I can…

  • make text to text, text to self, and text to world connections
  • explain how those connections help me understand the text
  • use the words in the text to create pictures in my mind
  • explain how those mental pictures help me understand the story

I will know I am successful when I can…

  • use the q chart to generate factual, analytic, and prediction, and synthesis questions for my book club novel
  • create questions that lead to interesting discussions

I will know I am successful when I can…

  • identify examples of literary devices such as imagery, irony, humour, simile, metaphor, symbolism, personification, onomatopoeia, and foreshadowing.
  • explain how these devices contribute to the meaning of the text

We are learning to….

  • Analyze media texts so that we can make informed decisions
  • Conduct research using reliable sources
  • Communicate information we’ve learned in writing for a specific audience and purpose
  • Communicate ideas effectively using visuals for a specific audience and purpose

I will know I am successful when I can…

  • Apply specific criteria to explain whether or not a text is reliable (the C.R.A.P. test)
  • Identify some good sources for research
  • Write in a series of well developed paragraphs with references to research sources
  • Create an infographic or poster that is appealing for my audience and easy to understand from a few feet away
  • Create a works cited page to accurately indicate the sources I’ve used.
