Tuesday February 18/14

Today we’re going to look at some specialized pieces of punctuation that–when used correctly–show you have a real mastery of written English. These pieces include: dashes, ellipses, parentheses, colons, and semicolons.

We’ll check out this handout: Punctuation Power Pack

When we’re done you’ll have time for your projects. We’ve got the lab booked for tomorrow and Thursday, by the way.

Thursday February 13/14

Today will be a work period for you, but we’re still going to a short lesson on the Three Cs: Coordination, Climactic Order, and Construction.

Okay “The Three Cs” isn’t really a thing. I just made it up.

Wednesday February 12/14

Want some more practice with parallel construction? Check this out: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/parallelism.htm

Also, yesterday we were talking about using logos, pathos, and ethos to analyze a Super Bowl Commercial. Well here you go:

What do you make of this?

Today we’ll be working in 208 (of course, if you’re reading this right now because you’ve just logged in to a computer in 208 then you already know this. Weird, isn’t it? It’s like I’m reading your mind…)

You have this period for working on your projects. Remember, check in #1 is due this Friday.

Tuesday February 11/14

We’ll start off with a bit of review this morning:

Have a look at your learning goals and success criteria for unit one. So far we’ve looked at literary devices and methods of argumentation. Check and see how comfortable you are with success criteria so far. Are there any things you feel you need more practice with?

Then we’re going to move on to looking at parallel structure. Here’s the handout you’ll need: parallel structure

Once we’re done that, I want you to pull out your proposals and we will figure out dates for the three checkins for your project. You will have the rest of the period for finishing your proposals: specifically the details for your three check-ins while I finish the last few conferences I need to finish.

Monday February 10/14

Today you’re going to be learning about rhetoric and argumentation. Here’s the handout for it: Logos Pathos Ethos

This week, I’d like to check your proposals again so please make sure you have the three spots filled out where you explain what your “deliverables” will be at each check-in. We will figure out the check-in dates tomorrow.

Friday February 7/14

We’re continuing our work from yesterday. It’s obviously taking me longer than I’d planned to get through conferences so we may have to make a plan to get through conferences at lunch.

While I am conferencing, keep working on your proposals. If you are completely stuck you can read.

Either way, don’t get stressed out about the project proposal. I will help you come up with a project that works. I promise.
