We’ll begin today by taking up the quiz on theories of fear.
Then we will brainstorm some well-known scary stories/movies. After that, we’ll have a note on the “Three Streams of Horror” and decide which stream each movie belongs to.
Next you’ll read a short story called “We” and there will be some questions to answer. I have uploaded both to edmodo if you are absent.
We’ll begin today with a pop quiz on King’s essay on Fear, Scared Witless, and Freud’s theory of the unconscious mind. You may use your notes.
When we’re done the quiz, we’ll review the idea of the fairy tale as a horror story in miniature. Then we will read a fairy tale that you probably haven’t read before: The Robber Bridegroom.
Next, you will analyze the fairy tale according to the pattern discussed in yesterday’s note. You will record your answers using this chart.
On Monday we will be in the computer lab to celebrate the completion of your personal essays. Please ensure that I have a copy of your recording by tomorrow so that you can take part in this. I am currently waiting for files from:

We will begin today with silent reading. If you have not finished your work for Scared Witless, you should do that instead.
Next we will take up the questions for Scared Witless.
Then we will complete a note on the Elements of Horror Fiction and look at Freud’s theory of the unconscious mind and how it applies to our desire to read scary stories.
Finally we will examine the fairy tale as a mini version of a horror story.
Today we’re going to be reading “Scared Witless”. I’m going to give you bookmarks to use as you read. I want you to practise the strategy of “talking back to the text”.
Remember, first, chunk your text into manageable pieces (you can draw on this text). Then at the end of each chunk use a sticky note (or write on the sheet) to summarize, ask a question, make a connection, clarify something, or comment on something. Your bookmark will help you with this. Be prepared to share your comments.
After you have read, I want you to get up and move around the classroom and share one of your sticky notes.
When we are done, you will work on the questions for the article.
Today we’re beginning our unit on short fiction and non-fiction. We’ll be reading suspense stories and learning about the psychology behind why we enjoy reading and watching things that scare us (or most of us!).
If you have not sent me the mp3 file of your oral essay, you need to do so by the end of the week. It is your first major mark of the course. If you’re having a problem with it, please come and talk to me asap. Once I have all the mp3s I would like to post them to our class blog so we can have a celebration day where we listen to each other’s essays and provide positive feedback.
Your questions for Stephen King’s personal essay are due today. We will take them up in class but before we do, I’d like to you write a journal response (1 page double spaced MINIMUM) on the following topic:
What scares you? Explain your fear and where you think it comes from. Is this a rational or irrational fear? How do you deal with it?
After we take up the questions, we will read a second essay called “Scared Witless.” We will then compare the two essays.
Today we will work on our recordings of the personal essays.
Not everyone will be able to record at the same time, so when you are not recording, please re-read the Stephen King essay and work on the questions. I have uploaded a digital version of this essay and assignment to edmodo. It will be due on Monday.
Today we will begin by viewing yesterday’s clips once more and compiling a list of strategies that effective speakers use. Then I want you to think of things you can do to make your personal essay more effective when you read it and indicate those things on your copy of the essay.

Today we’ll begin with silent reading–no specific reading strategies to practice today. Do what works for you.
Then we will analyze the qualities of an effective speaker. You will watch the following clips and make a list of the things you think make these people good speakers.
After watching the clips and making a list of the qualities of an effective speaker, you will write down some things you plan to try when reading your “This I Believe” essay in order to make it effective.

Your rough drafts are due today. We will use today’s class to work editing and revising.
First we’ll discuss the difference between editing revising. Then you will get into peer editing groups and take turns reading and providing suggestions for each other using your note on elements of a good personal essay as a guide.
When you’re done peer editing, you will make the revisions to your essay.
At the end of class you will hand in your drafts to me.
We will begin the recording process on Friday. If anyone has a device for recording, please bring it in as it will help us speed up the process. Thanks!
