Today you will be thinking about the kinds of difficult issues that face people your own age. There is a handout for this. You will brainstorm those issues and then think about the sources for the pressures that they face.
You will watch an episode of Degrassi the Next Generation and identify the issues presented in that episode. Then you’ll discuss whether or not the issues are presented in a realistic way.
Buy-out today, but for those of you who are staying, you should work on your book and bookmark questions.
Yesterday you had some silent reading time for your literature circle novels.
Firs, we’ll have a quick quiz on the qualities of effective group work.
Then we’re going to talk about how to generate good discussion questions, the format for our literature circle meetings, and then we’ll complete a practice literature circle meeting.
I’m still working on putting together the book club groups. If you were absent on Friday, you’ll have time to check out some of the books today while the rest of the class is reading silently. If you are absent today as well as Friday, I will choose your book for you.
In order for the book clubs to work, you need to be able to work effectively as a group member. I want you to think about a negative experience you had working in a group. How did you feel? What went wrong? Then think of a time when you were working in a group and it went well. How did you feel? Why do you think it was successful?
These are the basic elements that are necessary for cooperative learning:
1) Positive interdependence
2) Individual Accountability
3) Face to Face Interaction
4) Social Skills
5) Processing
You will practice all of these skills in a problem solving exercise. When you finish, reflect on how effectively you worked in your group.
Yesterday you had a chance to look at some of the literature circle books. Today I’m going to read a passage from each book and give warnings about mature subject matter some of the books contain. I want you to make sure you make your choice based on the story–not the way the book looks.
By the end of class give me your top three choices. I can’t guarantee you’ll get your top choice but I will do the best I can.
When we’re done, I’m going to show you the site that we used last year to blog about what we were reading.

You will be finishing the movie Secret Window today. Remember, it’s on the test. When the movie’s over you should study for your test and/or read silently.

Today we’re going to start with a little silent reading.
Then we will take up the Buffy sheets from Friday.
Next I’d like you to continue to work on your concept map, adding Buffy to the map and looking for more connections.
Sorry about the Buffy debacle. I tested the tape yesterday and it worked just fine, but apparently it didn’t work during class. Since this will be on the test we’ll have to watch it this period via youtube.
