Tuesday March 29/11

Today we’re going to be watching the movie Secret Window. You will have some questions to answer as you watch. I also want you to think about what stream of horror this movie belongs to, how atmosphere is created, and how you could apply Freud’s theory of the unconscious mind or Stephen King’s theories on fear.

To give you a place to discuss this, I’ve set up what’s known as a backchannel.

If you go to http://todaysmeet.com/secretwindow, you will be able to type your thoughts and have them appear live on the screen. Please do not abuse this feature or I will shut it down.

Good luck on your tests tomorrow!

Friday March 25/11

Today we handed in the paragraphs on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and reviewed the concept of mood/atmosphere. Then we started a concept map for the horror unit.

As a class we settled on Wednesday March 30 as the day for our horror unit test. Start studying!

Tuesday March 22/11

Yesterday we talked about fairytales as miniature horror stories for children. Fairytales address the deepest fears that children have and they are very satisfying for them because in the end the hero (who represents the child) is rewarded while the villains are punished.

Today we’re going to take up the chart for The Robber Bride Groom. Then we’re going to do a note on Buffy the Vampire Slayer because tomorrow you will be watching an episode and you will need to be able to identify the fairytales elements and horror elements in this show.

I’m also going to introduce you to the different novels for our literature circle unit today so you can think about which one you’d be most interested in reading.

Monday March 21/11

Today we’re going to talk about fairy tales.

Don’t worry; this is still part of the short horror fiction unit. We’re going to start today by looking at the original versions of two well-known fairy tales and then think about how they might be classified as horror stories.

Then we’ll go into a more in depth analysis of the fairy tale as horror story and study one that you’re probably not as familiar with.

Friday March 11/11

Due to the unexpected snow day today, I’ll extend the deadline for the Heil retell to the Monday after March Break. Please be prepared to submit a digital copy to edmodo or a hard copy to me when you return to school on Monday.

Have a great break!
