Thursday September 17/15

Today we’re going to begin by taking up the questions from yesterday applying Archetypal literary criticism to Things That Fly.

I’d like to watch this video to get you thinking about archetypes and the way we remix them in popular culture.

Now remixing material, is not exactly the same as archetypes, but one of the reasons that remixes work is because of archetypal patterns, symbols, and characters that we are able to recognize and derive meaning from.

Also, have a look at Joseph Campbell’s monomyth applied to The Matrix.

Tomorrow we will be starting reader’s journal conferences. Be prepared to show me a minimum of two pages in order to get effective feedback.

Wednesday September 16/15

We’re heading back to 211 today to finish our fairy tale comics. But you’ll only have 15 minutes for that. Then I want to get you into your literature circle groups and divide your novels into 3 roughly equal chunks. Please remember you mush have at least 2 pages worth of reader’s journals done by this Friday.

Next, you are going to create an account on our blogging site. The link for this is in the top right corner of our blog but I’m reposting it here:

We will use this site for blogging about our literature circle novels. I’ll give you some time to explore and write a practice blog post. Then we’re going to apply archetypal literary criticism to Things That Fly:

1) Review your additional handout on archetypes: Archetypal Literary Criticism. What archetypal symbols are present in “Things That Fly”? Discuss what these symbols have meant in other contexts and then apply this to “Things That Fly.”

2) Examine the hero archetype section on the Archetypes handout.  Identify and explain the ways in which the main character’s journey in Things That Fly corresponds to the different phases of the hero’s journey.

3) How are the Jungian concepts of persona, shadow, anima/animus and individuation present in this story?

Be prepared to share your analyses with the rest of the class

Monday September 14/15

On Friday you were introduced to the idea of literary criticism but since I wasn’t there to go through it with you we will briefly (well as briefly as is possible) review the concept. Then I will hand back your questions for Things That Fly and we’ll talk about reader response theory. By today you should all have your permission letters for your novels handed in. If I have your letter you can get your novel today. Please start reading and working on your journals for your novel right away. Remember you will need to have at least two pages done for me to look at on Friday.

Friday Sept. 11/15

Questions and reader’s journals for Things That Fly are due today.

We will take up the discussion questions and then learn about Reader Response Literary Criticism and apply this to the short story.

If you are away today please view the presentation below:

Remember: letters for literature circle novels please.

Tuesday May 6/14

Today we’re going to finish analyzing Hamlet’s second soliloquy, then write a second theme journal. When you’re done you’ll have time to tweet Act 2, but don’t forget about your final literature circle meeting tomorrow.

Monday May 5/14

Good copies of your essays due today! Don’t forget to submit to Turnitin.com before 11:59pm tonight or they will be marked late. Standard late mark deductions apply.

Quiz on Act 2 of Hamlet first and then we’re going to study one of Hamlet’s soliloquies. First we’ll watch and then you’ll paraphrase. This is going to be one of the few times where I’m going to say do it without consulting Sparks Notes (etc) or the internet. Put away the phones. Spend some time really digging into the text. You will be able to work in partners and you can consult me.

Friday May 2/14

Today we’re going to continue reading Act 2 in class. You will have to finish anything we don’t get to for homework. When we get to Hamlet’s soliloquy, “O what a rogue and peasant slave am I…” we’re going to stop and analyze it.

Don’t forget, your good copies of your essays are due on Monday. Many of you haven’t looked at your feedback yet on Turnitin.

Be prepared for a quiz on Act 2 on Monday.
