Questions and analysis notes for Politics and the English Language are due today.
You do not need to do an essay outline for the essay of argument since it’s very close to the persuasive essay. The only change of course is that rather than using the techniques of persuasion (appeal to emotion, hyperbole, connotative language, etc.), you may only use logic and reason. IF however, you did not submit your persuasive essay outline, then to avoid a zero you MUST complete the essay of argument outline. A digital copy is available here: Essay of Argument-Outline-
Next we will move on to the descriptive essay. If you were away, please see the following handouts:
Today you will have time to finish reading Politics and the English Language and then complete the analysis notes and questions. These are due tomorrow.
We’re going to start today by taking up the questions for Science and Beauty.
1) When thinking about whether the essay is formal or informal, don’t let the fact that the purpose of the essay might be to teach you make you think it therefore must be formal. Many of you said, it’s for an educated audience so it must be formal. But ask yourself, is this essay written for an audience educated about astronomy?
2) When thinking about the method of organization, let’s return to my “house” analogy. When you think about how a house is organized, you’re thinking about where the contents of the house are placed/stored. ei/ Where is the bathroom? Where is the kitchen? Where are the clothes kept?
When you’re thinking about how an essay is organized, you’re thinking about how/where the author places/stores his/her ideas. It gets tricky though. Because I could write an essay where I want to compare two different ideas, but that doesn’t mean I’d organize the essay that way.
3) USE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES TO SUPPORT YOUR IDEAS.
And now… onto today’s work. See yesterday’s post on logical fallacies.
