Monday November 9/15

Today we’re going to look at different types of logical fallacies

Logical Thinking and Argument

Then you will apply your knowledge by writing a paragraph arguing for or against one of the following positions:

  • Hunger Games style tournaments should be held each year in St. Thomas.
  • Twilight represents the pinnacle of literary achievement.
  • Cats are better than dogs.
  • Vegetarians are morally superior to the rest of the population.

Include at least 3 examples of faulty logic and be prepared to identify them.

Thursday November 5/15

We are blogging in room 215 today. Don’t forget to comment on at least two blog posts after you’ve posted yours. Also please remember to return your reader’s journals to the folder so they can be marked.

Monday November 1/15

Good morning! Today we’ll start with some reading time (remember your first lit circle meeting for this book is Wednesday.)

Then we’ll move on to the persuasive essay.

We’ll begin today with a note on the persuasive essay, then we’ll do a pre-reading exercise by responding to the following poem by Walt Whitman:

When I heard the learn’d astronomer,

When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me,

When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide and measure them,

When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,

How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,

Till rising and gliding out I wander’d off by myself In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time.

Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.

Take a few moments and consider the degree to which you agree or disagree with the sentiment expressed in this poem and why. Jot down a few ideas and then we’ll share ideas in a four corners discussion.

Next you will read the essay “Science and Beauty” by Isaac Asimov and complete some analysis notes and discussion questions.

Please hand these in tomorrow.

Thursday October 29/15

Today we carve our class pumpkin!

We’ll get in some reading time for your novels and then we’ll take up the questions for the essay jigsaw style.

Your outline for your narrative essay is due tomorrow.
